Transition to Appendices 11 & 12 / All UK fabricators currently approved to CARES SRC Appendices 6 and/or 10 to be completed by end of 2018
As you are already aware, the current SRC Appendices 6 & 10 will be withdrawn at the end of 2018 by which time any companies wishing to maintain their approval will need to have completed their transition to Appendices 11 & 12. These scheme requirements have been put in place to assure compliance with ISO 17660 part 1 & 2 and BS 8548 which replace the old BS 7123 standard. CARES approved reinforcement that is subsequently welded by a fabricator not approved by CARES for welding can no longer be claimed to be CARES approved reinforcement. Welding can change the properties of the bar and if this is not carried out in an approved way then the properties of the bar may no longer meet the requirements of BS 4449.
Some fabricators have raised concerns over the length of time taken to receive test results back from the independent laboratories as this is causing delays in their weld procedure qualifications. CARES have also experienced some delays in the testing of assessment weld samples so have therefore agreed to extend the transition period until the 31st March 2019 for those fabricators who have completed their welding transition assessment before the 1st January 2019.
Fabricators who have completed their transition assessment before the 1st January 2019 but have not yet been approved to SRC Appendices 11 & 12 will be permitted to retain their approval to Appendices 6 & 10 until the 31st March 2019 or until approval is granted, whichever is the sooner.
Fabricators who have not completed their transition assessment by the 1st January 2019 will cease to be approved for welding operations.
Similarly, fabricators who have completed the transition assessment by the 1st January 2019 but have still not been able to meet the requirements for CARES approval by the 31st March 2019 will cease to be approved for welding operations.
