Hot rolled flat steel products added to the Sustainable Constructional Steel Scheme

30/07/2015

CARES has developed an optional addition to the Sustainable Constructional Steel (SCS) Scheme that specifically addresses sustainability issues for the production of hot rolled flat steel products.

Details on how to implement this new addition to the scheme are now available in CARES SCS Appendix 6 in the SCS manual.

Lee Brankley, CARES Acting Chief Executive Officer, says “This addition to the SCS Scheme will enable the hot rolled flat steel products sector to independently demonstrate their sustainability credentials.”

CARES SCS Appendix 6 enables hot rolled flat steel producers to increase transparency, accountability and integrity of their operations with regards to sustainability and ethical business practices. They will be able to issue Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) to BS EN 15804 “Sustainability of construction works — Environmental product declarations — Core rules for the product category of construction products”.

The EPD is verified by a third party (BRE Global Certification) and published on the BRE – Greenbooklive website. The CARES SCS Scheme has been assessed by BRE Global against the requirements for responsible sourcing credits within BREEAM New Construction 2014.

CARES is the only certification body independently accredited by UKAS to the rigorous requirements of BS 8902 “Responsible sourcing sector certification schemes for construction products”.
