CARES is sad to report the death of its former Chairman of the Board, Dr George Somerville OBE, on 4 September 2015.

George was a structural engineer and Emeritus Professor at Imperial College who served as Chairman of the Board of CARES from September 2001 until April 2010. He made an important contribution to CARES during his time as chairman and had a profound impact on the organisation.

Les Clark, the current Chairman of the Board of CARES said: “George Somerville was a structural engineer who devoted the majority of his professional career to structural concrete. Over the course of about 40 years at the Cement & Concrete Association (later the British Cement Association) he made major contributions to the development of structural concrete, particularly through his work on national and international code committees and the authorship of authoritative guidance documents.

"CARES benefited greatly from his extensive experience of the concrete industry during the nine years of his chairmanship. I considered it to be a privilege to be invited to succeed him as Chairman of CARES in 2010.”
